Artist Statement

I met with an art consultant a few months ago. When I told him that the focus of my artwork was questions to create dialogue and self-reflection he responded, “Questions are fine but people want answers.”

He encouraged me to have answers for the questions my artwork provokes.

What makes us who we are?
Where does hate come from?
Can we love our enemies?
Is it possible to interact without judgment, without labels, without drawing conclusions or writing a story about each other in our heads?

Do I have answers to these questions? Sure. I have theories, hypotheses, beliefs, opinions and experiences and I can share all of this with you and fashion answers.

But I notice that when I think I know the answer to something I become closed to other people’s answers. I listen, but with thoughts already forming to share my (right) theory or experience. Everything is either accepted or rejected based on my perspective of the answer.

I watch as answers close my mind and questions open.

For this reason I spend more time with questions. Perhaps you will find answers in Breathe One Love artwork, or additional questions. In either case, I encourage you to follow the questions and question your answers.
